the patty diphusa stories are really funny. they are a kind of fictional memoir of a porn star alter ego, written for a madrid arts magazine in the eighties. you could tell almodovar was making them up as he went along (and forgetting where he had left off) and it adds to the dry, casual craziness of them. i would have probably loved the book if i hadn't actually read the other writings. sometimes his analysis of his own work feels a bit pretentious. the essay-type writings don't say much about process and read more as pointless promotional blurbs. i don't really know why they were republished. there are also a few short stories in here, but they don't come close to the genius of his films, often feeling like unfinished ideas. but i did like the "tips for filmmakers" one which is probably as close to an honest autobiography as we get, layered as it is with fictional possible lives running parallel to the possibly true one- much like the double lives in one of his films.

a linked series of trashy stories about a porn star and her adventures in madrid is followed by a mix of short essays and a couple of experimental fictions. patty diphusa is the porn star and her egotistic and dissolute narrative resembles that of the heroine of an anita loos novel. her outrageous memoirs are amusing in the beginning but become a little grating after a while and it is good that almodovar wraps them up fairly quickly. the essays give some insights into the director's cinematic career but they are generally superficial in tone. the earliest text here, a fiction called 'the birth of dada', is my favourite piece in the book. it relies entirety on the manipulation of anagrams to drive the action and can be considered a story in the oulipo mode. almodovar is hardly a writer of the first rank but his style is certainly distinctive
